ACTAA Event Rules (as they appear on the tournament ballots)
Duet Acting
· Script should have quality and aesthetic value.
· Script should only contain two characters.
· Script should be from a published source. (No original scripts may be used.)
· No props, costumes, makeup are allowed in performance. (Only two chairs may be used.)
· An introduction should be presented containing information necessary to understand characters and scene.
· Title and author should be presented in introduction.
· Time limit, inclusive of introduction, is 4-6 minutes.
Duet Improv
· Performers will draw three topics and choose one topic for performance.
· Performers will be allowed a total of 30 minutes prep time.
· Performers should be in their assigned room ready to perform within 30 minutes prep time.
· Performers should present topic slip to judges before performing.
· No costumes, props or makeup may be used during the performance. (Only one chair per performer may be used.)
· Performers must present an introduction containing the topic, characters and necessary background.
· Time limit, inclusive of introduction is 4-6 minutes.
Extemporaneous Speaking
· Speaker will draw three topics and choose one topic to present.
· Speaker will have 30 minutes to prepare speech.
· Speaker will be present and ready to deliver speech within 30 minute prep time.
· Topic slip must be given to judge prior to speech delivery.
· Speaker may use one note card (optional) during speech presentation.
· Electronic devices are allowed in the prep room. Internet is allowed, but host schools are not required to provide access.
· Time limit of speech is 4-6 minutes.
HI/DI
· The selection should be a cohesive cutting from a play that has quality and aesthetic value.
· The selection should contain two or more characters.
· Reader must use script.
· Costumes, props and makeup are not allowed during presentation.
· An introduction should be presented explaining necessary background of characters and selection.
· Title and author should be stated in the introduction.
· Time limit, inclusive of introduction, is 4-6 minutes
Mime
· May use 1-3 people in performance.
· Performance should not contain an introduction.
· No props, costumes, makeup may be used. (Only one chair per performer may be used.)
· Instrumental music should be used during performance. Music should not contain any vocalizations. (Sound effects are optional.)
· Performer(s) may not use any vocalizations during the performance.
· Performer(s) may not physically touch during the entire performance.
· Time limit is 4-6 minutes.
Oratory
· Topic of the speech should be original and creative in manner.
· Speaker must use manuscript.
· The purpose of the speech should be to stimulate or persuade.
· The content of speech should be the original work of speaker with no more than 75 words of quoted material.
· Time limit of speech is 4-6 minutes.
Poetry Interpretation
· The selection should be poetic in form and have quality and aesthetic value.
· If the reader chooses two or more short poems, they should have a common theme or author.
· Reader must use script.
· An introduction should be presented in a creative manner explaining poem or linking poems together.
· Title(s) and author(s) must be stated in the introduction.
· Reader should have no movement below the waist during presentation.
· Time limit, inclusive of introduction, is 4-6 minutes.
Prose Interpretation
· The selection should be a single prose form that has quality and aesthetic value. (Reader may cut or edit but may not use multiple prose sources.)
· Reader must use script.
· An introduction must be presented in a creative manner explaining necessary background of character(s) and selection.
· Title and author must be presented in the introduction.
· Reader should have no movement below the waist.
· Time limit, inclusive of introduction, is 4-6 minutes.3

· Only one chair per actor may be used in the performance. (Use of props, costumes or makeup is optional.)
· The ratio between words to music should be representative of the musical as a whole.
· Recorded accompaniment should contain no vocals. (A cappella or live accompaniment is optional.)
· Time limit is a maximum of 8 minutes.

· The selection should be from a literary form of prose, poetry, drama, essay, diaries, journals or a composite script based on a variety of sources.
· The cast should be two or more performers.
